I'm all about focus. If I'm concentrating, don't wait for me
to notice you've entered the room. You'll have to touch my shoulder to get my
attention. My paintings reflect my intense concentration in the level of detail I include. I
consider it a great compliment to be told
my paintings look like photographs.
That focus is limited to the specific image I happen to be working on, however.
The world is full of captivating snippets that defy categorization and
boundaries. To restrict myself to one topic would be the equivalent of eating
the same meal three times a day. Therefore, I usually limit my series to four or
five items, giving my portfolio a lot of breadth in style and subject.
I love to travel, and my work is often inspired by the places
I've visited. Sometimes I'm mesmerized by the ordinary: the curious shape of a
caladium and how it folds in a summer breeze; the way a vine creeps up the side
of the ruins of an old barn. Other images simply pursue me, like benevolent
ghosts, until I exorcise them with a paintbrush. Pablo Picasso said it
best: "The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the
place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing
shape, from a spider's web."
My preference for materials depends on the size of the piece and the subject.
For smaller works with lots of detail, I like watercolors and tiny brushes.
Acrylics fit me better for large paintings where I'm moving around the room and
waving a large, long handled brush. And for portraits, nothing beats a soft
pencil and charcoal for capturing the expression in someone's eyes.
Art has been an integral part of my life since I was a young girl. In high
school, my artwork won me nomination to the Governor’s Honors Program. I studied
fine art at Macon State College in Macon, Georgia, where my watercolors,
acrylics and metal sculptures were sold at student exhibitions. I also studied
commercial art at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia, until the field
of marketing captured my attention. I switched my major to business, and earned
a Bachelor’s of Business Administration. from Georgia State University, and
later, a Master’s of Business Administration from Kennesaw State University in
Kennesaw, Georgia. My artistic flair served as a cornerstone of a successful
marketing career, and I continued my love of art as a collector of other
artists’ work.
George E. Woodbury said, “It is not in life, but in art that self-fulfillment is
to be found.” So it’s not surprising my focus has returned to painting.
Thanks for showing interest in my passion.
